ALL THAT LEFT-OVER SOCK YARN

ScrapHappy August 2025

by Jan

Once upon a time I learned to knit socks and, for a while, there was no holding me back. I knitted piles of them and I loved it. But I also generated loads of oddments, leading to the question: what do I do with all that left-over sock yarn now? Over the years I've used it for various projects, but one that I'm very fond of and keep coming back to is the Beekeeper's Quilt.

This was one of those knitting patterns that was a bit of sensation a few years ago, but seems to have fallen out of favour. I can see why - it takes an awful long time and you have to make lots and lots of the little "hexi-puffs" to make anything sizeable. I, however, periodically return to mine and I'm currently stitching some of the puffs together.

A little bit of hexi-puff stitching

One of the most interesting things about this is to realise how bright these scraps are compared to the much worn and washed socks that the yarn is left over from. And it's great to know that when I make (yet) another pair of socks, I have a use for whatever oddments remain. Indeed, I've even used some of the really small bits as stuffing for a few of the puffs. I may never reach the size of a quilt, but perhaps I'll manage a chair pad!
