When Jan and I opened The Snail of Happiness in March 2022, we inherited our frankly splendid crocheted dragon from Red Apple Yarns. RAY had been the previous wool emporium, four shops up the road from where we are now in Lampeter. The dragon, which as I write this still has no name other than ‘Dragon’, was made by Rachel, a local taxi driver, using a Heidi Bears pattern.
For some time, after I had learnt to crochet, I looked at Dragon and thought “could I make him/her/it a friend?” That answer was “Nope”.

And I am cheating in that, instead of changing colour in each of the shapes used to construct the dragon, I am using variegated yarn, hand-dyed by Hook and Cwtch in Cardiff, from their Phantasm advent calendar that we got back in, ahem, 2024.
The dragon is made up from 127 motifs of varying sizes and shapes. I have my yarn and my trusty Tulip crochet hook in hand. Here goes…
